 | A Tiny Shift In Connecting
Schools
"Our mission is to advance education through access to the
Internet in under-serviced schools and communities by
providing equipment, services, technical
expertise and assistance to educators in areas of computer and Internet use.”.
About Us (page2) | | |
In
October 2010, Marianne Van der Wel was showing Joseph Nderitu, Elite
Marathon runner from the Nyahururu district in Kenya, a used laptop
that she had set up for him. We were to meet at the downtown
Hamilton, Ontario, Canada public library but it was closed.
Instead we sat down at an empty food court beside the library and
hooked up the computer to the Internet. Joseph reacted with
“How is this possible? We’re not connected to anything?”
Marianne replied: “The Internet is in the air, like radio waves”.
An idea was born! Let’s bring the Internet to rural schools in
the Nyahururu area, schools that do not yet have electricity.
Technology wise, this is now possible!
Marianne has been
supporting and continues to support several other non-profit
organizations with computing and public relations support. Two
are: “Healthy Smiles For Haiti” which brings affordable dental
care to that country and “Canadians In Support of Afghan Women” which
supports education in Afghanistan, particularly for women and girls.
Hence the thought of adding countries such as Haiti and Afghanistan
came quite naturally. Even in Canada there are schools that do
not have the Internet. To help alleviate this situation, “A Tiny Shift
In Connecting Schools” was founded in the spring of 2011!
With
the help of four officers and a start up committee that stretches as
far away as South Africa, “A Tiny Shift In Connecting Schools” is
currently laying a foundation of operational guidelines and formulating
a reporting system to provide a clear, transparent account of our
finances and future activities.
Our Name Evolution
occurs in small incremental steps of inner change over a period
time....in other words, in small shifts. When a ship veers
off course, a small shift in a corrective direction can bring the ship
back on course given sufficient time. Hence the name, “A Tiny Shift”,
was chosen to represent small incremental steps towards a large goal of
connecting all schools to the Internet over time so that:
➣ Everyone has access to humanity’s knowledge
➣ Everyone can participate in a global dialogue to help build an
equitable and sustainable world, each person acting locally while
thinking globally. Our Contact Info
